OAK MOUND – WALDO RUN
TRANSMISSION PROJECT
PROJECT NAME
Oak Mound – Waldo Run
The Oak Mound – Waldo Run project included the construction of approximately 18 miles of new, double-circuit 138kV transmission line from the expanded Oak Mound substation to the new Waldo Run substation near Bridgeport, WV. The line was designed using two-pole tubular steel structures with poured foundations for all dead-end and heavy-angle structures. Direct embedded foundations with concrete backfill were used for all other structures. Dead-end and angle structures also required down guys with grouted rock anchors. Access roads and drilled shaft foundation construction were contracted separately.
CLIENT
FirstEnergy / Mon Power
PROJECT LOCATION
Bridgeport, West Virginia
COMPLETION DATE
August 2016
Notable Project Accomplishments
The transmission line was constructed through a very mountainous and challenging terrain, requiring special logistical planning in order to accommodate access of cranes, concrete trucks, and other construction equipment. Installation of guy anchors required installation of grout for anchorage into rock. The unique design required specialized equipment and installation techniques. Additionally, due to the challenges of the mountainous terrain, helicopters were used for wire stringing operations.
