Benefits of an Asset Management Plan

A sound asset management plan provides a robust framework that enables your organization to improve safety, meet compliance regulations, increase efficiency, reduce costs, minimize risks, make informed decisions, and ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your valuable resources.

An ideal plan contains three key interconnected pillars with different objectives. The first creates the plan’s foundation by giving your organization a comprehensive understanding of your assets, while establishing a centralized database to track them. The second involves assessing the condition of your assets, identifying potential hazards, and performing any necessary repairs. The third focuses on conducting regular maintenance to improve asset performance, and extend the lifespan of your equipment.

Empower Your Business with AMP

Developing and executing an effective asset management plan on your own can be challenging and time-consuming.

STAGE 1

DOCUMENT

Inventory Your Assets

Our highly skilled, dedicated professionals will conduct an initial audit of your electrical equipment and current conditions to produce a new arc flash study or update an existing study of your facilities. We’ll determine the condition of your equipment, take interior equipment photos, document the details of your existing wiring configuration/ device settings, tag your equipment with smart labels, and track your assets to provide you with a complete equipment inventory.

STAGE 2

ASSESS

Determine the conditions and hazards related to your assets

We’ll leverage our preventative maintenance program and perform any necessary repairs based on our findings from the initial stage. We’ll address issues with your equipment that could result in safety concerns, poor performance, and even complete failures that impact your operations and profitability. Thermal imaging will be used to help detect problems.

Lastly, we’ll document all repair work, including any changes made to your system’s configuration. This is critical for multiple aspects of your business, including safety, compliance, troubleshooting, system performance, maintenance, and future planning.

How OSHA Changes Impact Your Business

OSHA strives to assure safe, healthful working conditions for employees by setting and enforcing standards, as well as by providing training, outreach, education, and assistance.

Within the electrical industry, OSHA requires that employees be trained to recognize and protect themselves from specific electrical hazards. For this, OSHA relies on the guidance established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) — specifically, through NFPA 70E and NFPA 70B. The former focuses on decreasing workplace injuries and fatalities due to shock, electrocution, arc flash, and arc blast. As an employer, you must follow the 70E standard in order to comply with OSHA laws.

The lesser-known 70B covers preventative maintenance for electrical equipment used in industrial, institutional, commercial, and large multi-family residential dwellings, and focuses on avoiding equipment failures that could cause injuries.

Until May 2023, 70B was merely regarded as guidance. However, it’s now considered a standard your business must follow. Additionally, 70B contains new information on how frequently to perform tasks on specific equipment in order to properly maintain it. When determining frequency rates, 70B now considers the condition of the equipment, and looks at factors such as operating conditions, criticality, and operating environment. Importantly, 70B also requires businesses to develop, implement, and operate an electrical maintenance program (EMP) which includes detailed, accurate documentation and data.

Failing to follow the 70E and 70B standards could result in fines and other penalties. Even worse, it could mean greater risks or hazards for your company, potentially leading to accidents, fatalities, lawsuits, and even higher insurance rates.
